The dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol are well-known. Despite the many public service campaigns aimed at informing the public about the potential harm drunk drivers can cause, incidents of drunk driving continue to occur. Unfortunately, drunk drivers riding on a road with bike paths used by cyclists in California could easily lead to serious bicycle accidents with multiple victims.

Reports indicate that such is the case regarding a recent incident. The reports claim that several members of a bicycle club were going on a long ride on a road with bicycle lanes on either side. The cyclists were reportedly on the right shoulder when a motorcycle driven by a 63-year-old man drove into the crowd of cyclists, striking the three leaders.

The three victims remain hospitalized; two are listed in serious condition while the third is listed in fair condition. The motorcyclist also suffered moderate injuries in the accident. He now faces criminal charges as a result of the incident, including driving while intoxicated. Bail was set at $47,000.

Even though these men were wearing protective gear at the time of the accident, bicyclists are susceptible to serious injuries if struck by a motorist. While all drivers should be alert to the potential of bicycle accidents at all times, special attention may be required on a road with bike lanes. In the meantime, these victims in California are left potentially facing a long recovery that may necessitate extensive medical treatment and time missed from work. To help cope with the financial toll of these complications, they may choose to file a personal injury lawsuit against the motorcyclist in search of a verdict ordering an award of monetary damages.
