The California Department of Health Care Services branch oversees many types of benefits, including something known as the Medi-Cal Benefits Division. One of the sole missions of the California Department of Health Care Services is to provide the people of California with access to the most affordable and high quality health care, including medical, dental, mental health, and more. Under this department, approximately 13.5 million Medi-Cal members receive care. These services are financed by the Department, making them the largest health care purchaser in all of California. They are also able to invest more than $93 billion for the care of low-income families, children, pregnant women, seniors, and people with disabilities. (1)

Benefits You Can Receive Under Medi-Cal

If you live in California and qualify for Medi-Cal benefits, you will be covered under a wide variety of services such as doctor visits, hospital care, immunizations, pregnancy services, and nursing home care. They cover "essential" health benefits such as outpatient services, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity care, mental health treatment, prescription drugs, rehabilitative services, laboratory services, preventative and wellness services, and children's services.

Medi-Cal also provides dental and vision benefits for both adults and children through a full scope of coverage. For adults, coverage includes exams and x-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatments, fillings, root canals of the front teeth, prefabricated crowns, and full dentures. For those that have the full range of coverage, they can also receive a routine eye exam every 24 months. However, only those who are under 21 years old and nursing home residents can receive eyeglasses. (2)
