The dangers of drinking and driving are well-known. However, people still make the decision to do so, putting their lives at risk as well as the lives of those they may encounter. Unfortunately, one family in California is likely suffering as a result of another driver’s alleged intoxication following a fatal accident.
The incident happened at approximately 9:30 p.m. on a Saturday night in late August. According to reports, a 24-year-old woman was headed south in a van. Reports indicate that she turned left, striking the median and causing the van to move into northbound lanes of traffic. Unfortunately, the van was in the path of a motorcycle, and a collision ensued.
Police say that when the driver’s attempts to flee the scene in the van were unsuccessful due to the damage it sustained, both she and her 50-year-old male passenger left the scene on foot. They were later apprehended. The motorcyclist, identified by family members as a 46-year-old father of three, passed away after he was transported to the hospital. While it is unclear what charges are suspected, police claim that alcohol and drugs were primary factors of the accident.
No family is ever emotionally prepared for the unexpected loss of a family member. Additionally, many in California also struggle with how they will manage the financial consequences, including medical bills, funeral expenses and lost wages. However, there are legal options when a fatal accident is caused by the negligence of another, including filing a wrongful death lawsuit to seek damages from the parties believed to have caused the person’s death.
