When driving on California roadways, drivers must remain vigilant at all times, especially when there are bicyclists or pedestrians in the area. Even an action as simple as changing a radio station can pull a driver’s attention away long enough to cause an accident. Unfortunately, bicycle accidents frequently result in serious injury, as evidenced by a recent crash believed to have been caused by a hit-and-run driver.
The accident happened one afternoon on a day in mid-September. According to reports, a 27-year-old man was riding his bicycle in the northbound lanes of a California road. Police believe that he was struck from behind by a pickup truck driven by a 23-year-old man.
Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital, approximately one hour after the accident happened. Police claim that the driver of the pickup did not remain at the scene and failed to call 911. He was taken into custody just hours after the accident and now faces multiple charges, including felony driving under the influence and hit and run.
Now a California family is left planning the funeral of their loved one. In addition to the emotional grief following such an unexpected loss, many people are unprepared for the financial ramifications, including the burden of funeral expenses. While some families rely on their community to manage the financial fallout, such an endeavor is often unable to adequately help family members in the aftermath of a fatality. Many victims of bicycle accidents — including surviving family members in the event of a fatality — turn to the civil court for compensation. If it can be proved that their loss was caused by another’s negligence, they could receive a financial award.
