If you are an avid motorcyclist or use your bike daily to ride to school or work, you undoubtedly encounter the odd rainy day. Even in Southern California, inclement weather happens from time to time.

Your job as a motorcycle rider is to deal with bad weather competently. In fact, if you approach it properly, you might even enjoy riding in the rain. Here are four tips to help you do just that:

1. Be a smooth rider

Exercise care when riding in the rain and change your riding style to suit less than ideal conditions. Make your throttle adjustments smoothly and in small increments. Use less of a lean angle than you normally would and remember to apply your brakes gradually.

2. Be alert at intersections

A personal injury attorney who is also an experienced rider will tell you that intersections can be hazardous to your health. The oils that surface in the pavement after a rain are more prevalent at intersections where cars stop, making the area very slick in spots. Decrease your speed and approach slowly.

3. Be aware of manhole covers

On a rainy day, a manhole cover can be as slick as black ice—another reason you should take care when approaching an intersection. If you cannot go around the manhole cover, roll over it smoothly without braking or accelerating.

4. Be well-dressed

A waterproof one- or two-piece rain suit along with boots and gloves will help you shake off water. Make sure you are comfortable in whatever attire you choose, not restricted in any way, and that you have room to move your fingers properly. An important item is your helmet. An anti-fog visor is good for riding in rain and fog, but you should also have a clear visor if you need to ride after dark.

Always exercise good judgment

As a motorcyclist, your goal is always to ride from point A to point B without having to make a detour to the hospital with injuries. You would rather not have to deal with the resulting medical and legal issues, so taking a few precautions will help you ride safely and perhaps even enjoy the rainy weather.
