Motorcyclists in California face many potential risks. In addition to road conditions that create havoc for these motorists, their smaller size make them more difficult to see. However, some of these hazards can be mitigated if other drivers take extra precautions when attempting a turn across travel lanes, for example. Unfortunately, police believe that a recent fatal accident was caused by the driver of a sports utility vehicle.

The accident happened one afternoon on a day in early February. According to reports, a 65-year-old male motorcyclist was headed south on a California road. Police reports indicate that a 65-year-old male driving a sports utility vehicle attempted a left turn into the path of the motorcycle.

The motorcycle struck the right rear of the SUV, resulting in fatal injuries to the motorcyclist. No one in the SUV — either the driver or his passenger — was injured in the collision. It is unclear if charges are expected to be filed against the surviving driver.

While officials are working to determine what caused the fatal accident, the surviving family members of the deceased man are likely working to come to terms with the news of the man’s death. Often, families face significant financial implications in addition to to their grief. To help cope with lost wages and funeral expenses, some families choose to file a wrongful death lawsuit if the loss was caused by another’s negligence. If their claims can be proved, they could receive a financial award, allowing them to focus on their recovery rather than how they will pay their bills.
