Due to a variety of different factors, motorcycles are often more difficult to see. When these inherent risks are combined with drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the risks for motorcyclists can become even higher. In fact, police in California say that a recent fatal accident was caused by a driver who was under the influence of marijuana.

The incident happened one morning on a day in May. The 25-year-old victim’s girlfriend claims that he was on his way to work at the time of the collision. Reports indicate that a vehicle driven by a 67-year-old man struck the motorcyclist while the former attempted a left turn.

The motorcyclist was transported to the hospital where he ultimately passed away. Police say that the man driving the vehicle that reportedly struck the motorcycle admitted that he smokes marijuana for medicinal purposes but denied that he was under the influence at the time of the accident. However, officers claim that tests made it “clear” that he was under the influence. He was arrested, suspected of vehicular manslaughter.

Even under perfect conditions, a motorcyclist in California can easily be harmed due to a motorcycle’s smaller size. Because they may be more difficult to see, drivers of traditional motor vehicles must remain vigilant. Unfortunately, a family — including three small children — is left coping with the financial and emotional consequences of their loss as a result of this fatal accident. To help with complications created by lost wages, funeral expenses and medical bills, many who are coping with the death of a loved one choose to seek financial damages in a civil court.
