Though there are multiple ways to legally enjoy California roadways, there are certain conditions that could prevent alternative methods — such as bicycles and motorcycles — from being safely utilized. For example, poor roadway design and inattentive drivers could easily cause harm to bicyclists. In fact, a woman has recently settled a lawsuit after she was injured in a bike crash.
The incident happened in May 2016. The female victim, who was 53 years old at the time, was biking to work at Travis Air Force base where she worked as the chief neurosurgeon. She was reportedly in a marked bike lane when she was struck from behind by a box truck driven by a county employee.
The woman suffered several injuries in the collision, including compound fractures to one of her legs, a broken back and a broken ankle. As a result, she was unable to continue her work as a neurosurgeon. Afterward she filed a lawsuit against both the county and the city, alleging that the road was poorly designed. The matter was reportedly settled in private mediation for $14 million.
It is startling to think how significantly a person’s life can be changed in the blink of an eye. All it takes is one inattentive driver, for example, to completely change the path of someone’s life. Because victims of a California bike crash such as this often suffer significant financial ramifications due to lost wages and medical bills, they often choose to pursue recompense in a civil court as this woman has done.
