Regardless of where a person lives, he or she may have multiple transportation options. Many in California choose to travel on a motorcycle. Unfortunately, motorcycle accidents can often have devastating consequences as they provide few physical barriers to protect riders. In fact, Southern California Gas Co. recently settled a personal injury lawsuit filed against it after one of its drivers allegedly caused a serious accident.

The incident happened last year. Reports indicate that the victim, a member of the U.S. Air Force was stopped at a red light on a motorcycle when he was struck from behind by a SoCal pickup truck. The driver reportedly did not stop, dragging the motorcyclist, until other drivers surrounded the vehicle.

The motorcyclist reportedly in danger of losing his leg as a result of the accident. The pickup driver is said to have suffered an epileptic seizure, which caused the accident. Representatives for the motorcyclist and his wife claim that the pickup driver had a history of epileptic seizures; that history reportedly included a seizure suffered while at work. The company who employed the man has recently settled the case for $46 million.

Accidents can happen for a variety of different reasons in California, many beyond the control of those involved. However, when someone has a medical history that indicates he or she could be a danger to others and continues to get behind the wheel of a vehicle, an accident could easily occur. Often those injured in motorcycle accidents caused by another’s negligence choose to file a personal injury lawsuit against the party or parties deemed responsible. When an accident involves a commercial vehicle, the employer could also be held accountable.
